Why Are Pallets Given Away Free?

Many businesses receive goods on pallets but have no use for the empties. Rather than paying for disposal, they offer them free for collection. This creates a viable (if inconsistent) source of free pallets across Australian cities.

Where to Find Free Pallets

1. Industrial Estates & Business Parks

Warehouses, distribution centres, and factories regularly stack unwanted pallets outside for collection. Drive through industrial areas early in the morning for the best picks.

2. Hardware Stores (Bunnings, Mitre 10)

Many hardware stores are happy to give away pallets. Always ask the store manager first — policies vary by location.

3. Supermarkets & Retail Centres

Large retailers receive thousands of pallets weekly. Ask the loading dock manager if they have spare pallets available.

4. Gumtree & Facebook Marketplace

Search "free pallets" on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. Many businesses list them regularly.

5. Building & Construction Sites

Deliver sites often have pallets from materials. Note: always get permission before taking anything from a building site.

What to Check

• No "MB" stamp — Pallets stamped "MB" have been treated with methyl bromide (toxic). Avoid these entirely.
• Condition — Check for broken boards, protruding nails, and structural integrity. A collapsed pallet under load is dangerous.
• Contamination — Avoid pallets that show signs of chemical spills, mould, or pest damage.
• Permission — Always ask before taking. Pallets stacked on private property are not automatically free.

When Free Isn't Worth It

If you need consistent quality, specific sizes, or large quantities, free pallets won't cut it. The inconsistency, transport costs, and time investment often make it cheaper to buy from a proper supplier — especially used/recycled pallets at $5–$12 each.
